The licenses of KT and LG Uplus have been revoked after the federal government revealed that main South Korean cell operators have been punished for failing to achieve a compulsory base station deployment goal within the 28 MHz band.
The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) defined in a press release that it canceled the five-year spectrum licenses of KT and LG Uplus as a result of they failed to achieve the minimal requirement with deployment of lower than 10 p.c of the goal.
SK Telecom (SKT), which had secured a barely greater charge of over 10 per cent, had its validity decreased by six months to Might 31, 2023.
MSIT warned SKT that if it didn’t proceed with the deployment, its mmWave task could be cancelled.
Every operator was required to arrange 15,000 base stations within the 28GHz community inside three years from the time the spectrum license was granted.
Business analysts famous that operators have been gradual to rollout 5G service on the 28GHz band as a result of gadget makers have not launched suitable handsets in Korea, in contrast to the three.5GHz band, which has a extra mature ecosystem.
The ministry mentioned the inspections confirmed that the three missed the allocation goal of twenty-two,500 base stations within the 3.5GHz band, which has a ten-year license.
South Korea raised KRW3.6 trillion ($2.5 billion) in one of many world’s first 5G auctions in 2018 with three cell operators within the 3.5GHz and 28GHz bands.
